Foliar Treatments for Control of Diseases on Mustard Greens

A.B. Smith, N.B. Shamiyeh, and C.W. Meister

Interpretive Summary

Mustard greens treated with Quadris or Pristine had lower rates of Alternaria than all other treatments. No phytotoxic effects were present in any of the treatments.

Introduction

Mustard greens are grown commercially on approximately 275 acres as well as being in numerous family gardens in Tennessee. Though most diseases are not a major problem for this crop, a few leaf diseases can appear throughout the state. For this reason an experiment was conducted at the Plateau Experiment Station to evaluate the efficacy of several foliar treatments in preventing diseases on mustard greens.

Materials and Methods

The site was prepared using conventional tillage in early October. Fertilizer was broadcast at 300 lb/A of 15-15-15 before final disking October 10. Bensulide (Prefar 4E) at 5.5 lb ai/A and Trifluralin (Treflan 4 EC) at 0.75 lb ai/A were incorporated on October 10 for weed control. Plots were two rows on 3 ft centers, 15 ft long. The crop was direct seeded on October 13 using an Earthway seeder. Experimental plot design was randomized complete block with four replications. Fungicide applications were made using a 2.5 gal compressed CO2 hand sprayer calibrated to spray 35 gpa at 40 psi. Treatments took place after weekly disease evaluations on Nov 4, Nov 11, and Nov 18. All data was analyzed using the analysis of variance method, and the means were separated by Duncan’s multiple range test at the 0.05 level.

Results and Discussion

Alternaria was the only disease that was present during the course of this experiment. Plots treated with Quadris or Pristine had significantly lower rates of disease than the other treatments for all the evaluation dates (Table 1). Plots treated with Cabrio had less disease pressure than the untreated plots, and the Acrobat + Maneb treated plots, but was not as effective as the other treatments used. No phytotoxic effects were apparent for any of the treatments used.
