PREFACE The reports contained within this publication represent the results of work completed during the 2003 growing season as part of the University of Tennessee Vegetable Initiative. These reports do not constitute recommendations to growers and producers. These reports represent one growing season of data collection at a limited number of test locations. Data and results presented are for informational purposes only. Long term data collection at multiple locations and the resulting statistical analyses may result in future recommendations as determined by individual or team researchers involved in the specific research topics mentioned. Results of research and demonstrations conducted in 2003 may be useful to growers as a source of information limited by one year of data collection and analysis. The University of Tennessee Vegetable Initiative is a team effort with extension, teaching and research personnel from several different departments and sections within the Institute of Agriculture and the extension personnel in several counties across the state. The Vegetable Initiative will be cooperating with North Carolina State University and the University of Kentucky through 2004 on vegetable research, demonstrations, short courses and publication. This type of cooperative venture adds to the amount of data and information available to growers in all three states and shares expertise of personnel from three states. Growers are encouraged to work with all Vegetable Initiative team members and seek production and marketing assistance as well as keep team members informed about production and marketing problems that may be included in future projects and demonstrations. Suggestions for research projects or extension demonstrations are welcomed by team members. Our goals are to remove as many obstacles to production or marketing as possible as growers can concentrate on production and marketing with confidence. Let us help you be a better producer and seller of vegetable and fruit products. Visit our web site at www.utvegetables.org to access current information on vegetable research; www. smallfruits.org will provide information on fruit production.
