Description Unpaid Field Internship Opportunity with the Obed River Watershed Community Association

Contact: Andrea Ludwig

Supervisor: Dennis Gregg

Description: The Obed Watershed Community Association (OWCA) seeks a student with a
background in environmental sciences or biosystems engineering for an unpaid field internship
beginning Nov. 7, 2016. This student will shadow the project team through a stream
restoration project located in Morgan County, Tennessee. The project impacts approximately
600 linear feet of stream and is funded through the Tennessee Dept. of Environment and
Conservation. The student will work under the supervision of Dennis Gregg, Executive Director
of the OWCA, and with design engineers. The scope of the position includes topographic
surveying, creating maps using geographic information system software, assisting in design
calculations for sediment transport and estimations of cut/fill, and other various support
duties. The student will be exposed to the complete stream restoration design process,
including submitting a state permit application and work with design engineers and ecologists
during design and construction of the project.

This project will be constructed in the summer of 2017. The student will have an opportunity
to continue their work through that time and learn about construction techniques. Time
requirements will be variable for the remainder of the 2016 semester dependent on the
student’s availability. Project activity will increase in the spring 2017 semester. It would be
valuable for the student to have a schedule that would allow for periodic field visits (roughly
once every other week), which would entail most of the regular work day.

Please inquire with Dr. Ludwig (aludwig@utk.edu) as soon as possible if you are interested in
this opportunity.
