Description SOIL SCIENTIST TECHNICIAN
Williamson County Department of Sewage Disposal Management is seeking a qualified
individual for the position of Soil Scientist Technician.

Williamson County is one of the fastest growing counties in the state of Tennessee and one of
the most affluent in the nation. Over the past several years, we have experienced tremendous
growth. That, coupled with the limited availability of sewers in the County, has presented
tremendous challenges in providing services necessary to support such growth. Our agency is
charged with regulating all aspects of on-site wastewater disposal in the County in order to
protect public health and the environment.

The field of soil science is vital in carrying out our mission. As such, we currently employ four
full-time licensed soil scientists, and have a vacancy for a full-time soil scientist technician.
We are in the process of soliciting qualified applicants to fill this vacancy. Reporting to the
Department Director, this position will entail various aspects related to on-site wastewater
systems to ensure compliance with the regulations of Williamson County. This position will
assist our staff soil scientist in evaluating soils within Williamson County for potential use of
individual on-site wastewater systems. Other duties include, but are not limited to, the
oversight of independent soil consultants working within the County and the evaluation and
repair of failing on-site wastewater systems. Additional duties will be assigned at the
discretion of the Director. Training underneath our staff soil scientists, this position
will provide the minimum required experience necessary to qualify for licensure.

Successful applicants shall possess a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or
university in Soil Science, Agronomy, and/or Agriculture with emphasis in plant and soil
science or agronomy; or possess a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or
university with significant course work in biological, physical, and earth sciences, as well as
an additional 15 semester hours in soil science courses (e.g. Introduction to Soil Science, Soil
Morphology, Soil Chemistry, Soil Physics, Soil Hydrology, and Soil Genesis & Classification,
etc.).

Applicants must also possess the ability to perform significant physical labor including, but not
limited to, the operation of a hand auger and probe, walking over rough and wooded terrain
while carrying necessary equipment, and all other physical labor outlined in the job description
for this position (copy available upon request). A valid Tennessee Driver’s license is required.

The compensation and benefits package includes, but is not limited to:
• approximate starting salary of $43,000 (commensurate with education and/or experience)
• medical, dental and prescription drug insurance
• life insurance
• paid annual and sick leave
• paid holiday leave
• retirement program
• excellent working conditions
